How this password generator works

This generator builds each password one character at a time using your browser's secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Each character is chosen independently from the options you select, and the tool picks again if a result would be biased or would be missing a character type you selected. The entropy figure is the length multiplied by log2 of the number of possible characters, so each extra character adds about 6.1 bits when all four character types are enabled. The password is shown only on this page and is not sent anywhere.

Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager. If a site limits symbols, turn off Symbols and increase the length to make up for it.

Key takeaways

  • Length matters more than complexity.
  • Use a different password for every account.
  • A password manager makes unique, long passwords practical.

Frequently asked questions

Is this password generator safe to use?

Passwords are generated in your browser using the Web Crypto API's secure random number generator. They are not sent to a server or stored.

How long should a password be?

Longer is stronger. For accounts you care about, 16 characters or more is a sensible target, and a password manager makes that practical.

What does entropy mean?

Entropy, measured in bits, describes how unpredictable a password is based on its length and the size of the character set it was drawn from. Higher is harder to guess. The figure shown is an estimate and assumes the password was generated randomly.

Should I use a password manager?

A password manager lets you use a unique generated password for every account without memorizing them.
